Tale of two lakes

I enjoyed my evening run today after a fun day off with my two daughters.

I ran from the office to Pugnies, one lap and then on to Newmillerdam, did one lap and back to the office, steady 13k. Please have a look on Strava

I was originally hoping to run a sub 4 hour marathon but that is just not going to happen. I would be very happy with sub 4:30 now.

Today I ran under 1/3 of marathon distance and if I maintained the pace would complete the event in 4:48.

Slow Run

Another slow run at nearly 7km/h! Check it out on Strava

Kitchenroyd – Denby Dale – Upper Cumberworth – Lower Cumberworth – Shelley – Emley – Flockton
On the plus side of a 1h 45m run it gives lots of time to think, I always used to run and listen to music but in recent times realised that time was wasted. I now prefer not to listen to anything and take the uninterrupted time to think!

4 Weeks to go

Odd sort of week, my foot has been quite painful at times, but this is partly due to putting weight on. I can not really believe I have put on 4 pounds in a week!!!

I have only managed 4 runs this week (so I really need a big week next week), on two occasions the 6 and bit k run down to Clayton West. The first was not too bad Click Here the pace was 6:10/km the second a lot slower at 6:40/km Check It Out

On Good Friday I did two laps of the Scissett Triathlon run route which I really enjoy, it was the first run I went out in a t-shirt for. Check out the run on Strava. This is a great little loop including some off road country running. On the second lap I got held up and the path was blocked by a pack of hounds.

On Easter Sunday I did a short run before lunch, which was a 5k circular Flockton Run on Strava

It would be fantastic if you would consider sponsoring me!

Breakthrough training sessions

Last week Paul posted in a great week of training.  The highlight was of course, knocking 1:30 off his PB at the Lincoln Park Run.  What pleased me most was the psychological breakthrough this represented.  The analogy I gave Paul when we last spoke was Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile for the first time in 1954.  Many had tried before Bannister’s attempt but there was a common belief the 4 minute mile couldn’t be done. Once this barrier was broken only 46 days later New Zealander John Landy broke Banisters record and others quickly followed suit.  It is remarkable what we can achieve in running if we believe it’s possible.

‘Knowing’ how to run quicker means you can repeat the feat.  If you plateau in your running and feel you’re no longer improving, try Paul’s trick.  Choose a low key race, go super hard at the beginning and hanging on till the end.  5km Park Runs are perfect for breakthrough runs.

This week’s training focus

The goal this week is to complete at least 5 training runs.  It would be good to use the WATT bike to warm up for 15 minutes before some of the runs.  This way Paul can get in some extra training time and some make the sessions more triathlon specific. Trying to fit this into a busy schedule will be the challenge.  I’ve asked Paul to run at his anticipated marathon pace for substantial parts of his longer runs to get used to running at this speed.

John Disley co-founder of the London Marathon died recently

To finish this blog I’d like to pay tribute to John Disley a contemporary of Roger Banister.  Disley co-founded the London Marathon with Chris Brasher in 1981.  (Brasher had been one of the pacers for Bannister in the 4 minute mile attempt). Without these remarkable, farsighted athletes, breaking down barriers to get the London Marathon on the calendar, Paul wouldn’t have a date with destiny in a few weeks’ time.

Yippee…

Lincoln park run PB, 1m 30sec faster than two weeks ago. I consciously pushed myself a little harder than normal, I spent 14% of the time in Zone 4 Threshold and 4% in Zone 5 so clearly a long way to go on pushing myself. Dave, what percentage of time should I spend @ Threshold?

If you have never done a Park Run you should give it a go, local timed 5K runs which are amazingly friendly, inspirational and FREE check it out @ parkrun.org.uk
